Title and Author: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl

My Review:

This is the story of a small boy Charlie Bucket who was
poor, born to penniless parents and lived with his family including his
grandparents in a small dilapidated house. Always hearing stories about the
chocolate factory in his town, owned by the eccentric Willy Wonka, Charlie
dreamed of seeing the factory from inside. He was given this chance when he won
a golden ticket which was part of a scheme started by the candy maker to find
five chocolate lovers who would see the factory from inside. The story tells
the adventures of Charlie in the mysterious and secretive chocolate factory which
had remained closed to people for years.

First published in 1964, Roald Dahl had been fascinated by the
chocolate factories who would give out chocolates to children during his
childhood to taste and rate as part of their promotional strategy. The
companies like Cadbury were secretive of their chocolate making methods and
used strict measures to avoid any leakage. They also often sent out spies to
learn more about their competition. All this proved an inspiration for Dahl to
write this story when he grew up.

The
book is written in the third person and vividly narrates the adventures of
Charlie in the chocolate factory. Roald Dahl’s writing is simple and he invents
his own vocabulary to make the story more interesting and to give his
characters more color. The eccentric Willy Wonka is shown as a man with unexpected
mood swings and who uses unconventional words like “snozzwangers” that are
funny and highly entertaining. The plight and difficulties of Charlie’s family
who are dealing with poverty is also shown sensitively through the author’s engaging
writing.

I
have enjoyed reading numerous of Roald Dahl’s works and this is among his
better works which entertains as well as teaches. I felt sorry for Charlie and
his family who are poor but still determined to live happily within their
means. I was highly entertained by the eccentric Willy Wonka and loved the tour
of the chocolate factory. I loved the wide eyed delight and curiosity of
Charlie while in the chocolate factory and also enjoyed the interesting way in
which Dahl described the chocolate factory with its many different kinds of candies
that were everywhere. A must read book for children as well as adults which is
guaranteed to give you a few hours of solace from your daily problems. A 4 out of 5 to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. 🙂
