Star Blogger This Week

Rubina Ramesh from The Book Club

Q1.
Tell us something about yourself.

My life from the beginning
has been full of travels. In fact, I was teased often that I am born with
wheels on my heels.
J I
was born in Ranchi, a hill station in Bihar. As I said, my Dad had been in a
transferable job so never stuck in one place and finally passed out from St.
Josephโ€™s Convent, Patna.
All through my travels, my
only love and best friend proved to be my books. My mom was a voracious reader
and it was always, encouraged in my house. I read anything from Charles
Dickens,
Georgette Heyer, Shakespeare to Sidney Sheldon, Barbara
Cartland and Mills and Boon.  I love all
genresโ€ฆ
J
I finished my MA in English
from Bangalore University and then after my marriage did my MBA from the
Liverpool University, Uk, and as my life was full of travelling I never could
hold on to a job.
J
Thank God for that, for my
DH also has the same bug as my Dadโ€ฆ. Travelling.

Q2. When did you first get the idea to blog? When did you start
this blog?

I used to read a lot and
frankly speaking did not have much idea about blogging. I started playing
Farmville. (Not a very laudable thing to do, but sometimes these games help
since I was travelling so much, could not keep up with the social norms of
friendships) . At that time my brother pointed me towards blogging. He had a
photography page and since I loved books, I started doing reviews. And then
life changed.. three hundred and sixty degrees.

Q3.
How did you come up with this name for your blog?

Well, I couldnโ€™t think of
anything original. My favorite program at that time was Oprah Winfrey. She has
a Book Club. It then struck me. This is what I wanted. A group of friends who
share with me the same love. Love for books. I just had not envisaged at that
time that my small oyster would open so wide.

Q4.
What is your blog about?

This is one question I have
been often asked. Am I a romance reader only? No, I read every genre. And I
love promoting new authors. Most of the books I review are by new authors. They
need a platform too, and  I found some of
the books too fascinating to let go of. Originally, I started with only western
authors, for the simple reason they were more approachable, with me living on
this side of the world. But now, more and more Indian authors are approaching
me and some of them have been an honor to read.

Q5.
Whatโ€™s the best thing that has happened to you because of blogging?

The world opened to me.
Strangely, I became more aware of the Indian authors, both through their
writings and personally. I got introduced to the Indian Mills and Boon
scenario, to self published authors and the Asian publishing Houses. I then
came to realize that these books need to come out and be showcased outside
India too.

Q6.
What is the one special thing about your blog that sets it apart from all the
other similar blogs out there?

The Book Club is no more
just me. It is now a group of lovers of books, who have come together to spread
the word. It is open to anyone who loves books. Anyone who wants to know about
books. We are not constrained by geography or demography anymore.Western
writers who want to promote books in India and Indian writers who want to
promote their book in the Western scenario. All are welcome. But we have only
one rule. Please give us good edited work โ€“professionally done.
Q7.
What are your future plans for your blog?

We have started The Blog
Tours where a group of writ
ers and reviewers are coming together to do blog hops.
A blog hop is when multiple bloggers put up a particular book on their blogs at
a specific period of time. And we can’t do this without the Author’s
participation. So ultimately, it is a combined effort between the author and
the bloggers.
We are also coming out with
an online magazine, Rezine. This will be open to all Reviewers who wants to
link their reviews to our magazine and also all authors who wants to tell the
readers about their books.
A
quick top 5 with you:

Favorite
past time?

Photography and Movies. I have a photography club also
J And love travelling.

Favorite
tourist destination?

Thank you so much Nikita for giving me this opportunity to speak about our Book Club. I do hope many more join us in our endeavor.
