Book Review:
Forbidden Ground by Karen Harper is the second book in the Cold Creek series and having read and enjoyed the first book, Shattered Secrets, I was eager to start on this one.
This book narrates the story of Kate, one of the Lockwood sisters who has returned to Cold Creek to attend her sister, Tess’ wedding. An anthropologist, Kate makes her living studying the dead. She is particularly interested in the prehistoric Adena civilization that once called the area home. A large burial mound sits on Mason family land, and Kate wants permission to excavate. But Grant refuses and tells Kate to stay away from the mound. While Kate respects his decision, she fears he is hiding something and when she is attacked with several other incidents, it becomes clear that they are facing an unknown assailant bent on mischief and more.
The plot is conceived and executed admirably and I was intrigued by the prospect of uncovering more secrets that lay hidden in the small town of Cold Creek. The author balances suspense and mystery well and creates a dark, gloomy and frightening atmosphere which gave me chills guessing about all the possible dark secrets that were still to come out. The cult reference from the previous book makes an appearance in this one too and I was as horrified by the blind faith of people as I had been in the previous book. They are so blind that they are willing to even hurt their loved ones, all in the name of some belief. The transition of practical people to unreasonable, blindly following cult followers is so drastic and brought out so well that I could not help but pray for such people.

The romance is good but I didn’t quite connect with Grant Mason. He seemed a good man but still his actions didn’t sit well with me at places. Kate is also someone I didn’t feel close to. She is unreasonably driven and somewhat just too uptight. Later they did soften and worked well with each other but still their romance didn’t work that well with me as Tess and Gabe’s had been.
The story is fast paced and has dark, thrilling, mysterious and suspenseful overtones that had me engaged throughout.
All in all, Forbidden Ground is a suspenseful story that will keep you guessing until the very end. 4 out of 5 to it and recommended to all romantic suspense lovers.
I received the book from the publishers via Netgalley and I am very thankful to them. The above review is my honest and unbiased opinion and in no way influenced.
