#WillYouShave–> When Bhaiya became Uncle!

This incident happened with my cousin. My cousin’s name is Sameer and it was the day that we were supposed to go meet the girl’s family and ask for her hand in marriage to my cousin. It was an arranged match and so my cousin was not very keen on meeting the girl whom he hadn’t seen until then. Imagining her to be boring and not someone he would like, he didn’t take any pains in grooming himself for the meeting.

He dressed casually in tattered jeans, a worn out shirt and didn’t even shave. Despite our objections, he was adamant on not presenting himself well. My uncle was very angry but still, after much placating from my aunt, went ahead to meet the girl whose name was Rakhi.

When we reached Rakhi’s house, we were shown inside. Soon after Rakhi came out with her parents and her younger brother, who was six or seven years old. As soon as he saw my cousin, he exclaimed with a horrified expression on hs face,
“Didi, don’t marry him. He is not a Bhaiya but an Uncle!”
We were all shocked and a bit embarrassed at this outburst and Sameer, who was enamored by Rakhi’s beauty at first sight was especially ashamed at his recklessness. He asked for his parents’ as well as Rakhi’s parents’ forgiveness and assured the small boy that he was not an Uncle which he proved to him the next time he went to Rakhi’s house. He was clean shaved and well dressed and finally, approved by his to-be brother-in-law!

Since Rakhi’s father knew my Uncle and Rakhi also agreed to the match after talking to Sameer who, I am sure, had to convince her that he was not some loafer but a well behaved boy, unlike his look that day, they were soon married.

We all laughed at this incident then and do laugh at it even now but Sameer learnt a valuable lesson that day. He learnt that well-groomed people make a good first impression which can sometimes turn their life around. He is now very serious about his looks and never wants to repeat his past mistake again.
